Three questions that need different searches
“Where has this photograph appeared?” asks for copies of the same picture. “What is the object in this photograph?” asks for visual understanding. “Are there other portraits that resemble mine?” asks for face similarity. These questions overlap, but answering one does not answer the others.
Google describes Lens results as including objects, similar images and websites with related images. TinEye describes its API around finding uses of an image, including modified copies. Start by deciding which of those outcomes you actually need.
What happens between upload and results
An engine processes the visual information in your image and compares a representation of it with an index. That index is a selected collection, not a live view of everything online. The engine ranks candidate results and may attach a thumbnail, similarity score and source page.
The source is the useful part. A thumbnail can tell you that two pictures look alike. The surrounding page may tell you who published it, what the caption says and whether the image is being used as an illustration. Those are separate pieces of evidence.
A practical first search
- Write down the question you want the image to answer.
- Keep an untouched copy and prepare a search copy without unrelated private information.
- Choose an engine suited to that question and review its upload terms.
- Open several source pages rather than judging the thumbnail grid alone.
- Record what each page actually supports, including anything that conflicts.
For example, a portrait appearing in a stock library establishes that a copy is available there. It does not establish who controls an unrelated account using it. A page dated earlier than another is a lead about publication history, not automatic proof of authorship.
Why a search can return nothing
An image may be new, private, inaccessible to crawlers, altered beyond the engine’s tolerance, or simply absent from that particular index. Repeating the same upload does not change those conditions. Try another search approach, then keep the conclusion narrow: no result was found in the search you ran.
