Remove unrelated context
Prepare a copy without personal photographs, documents or other private details. Preserve enough of the artwork's edges to compare the composition, but avoid uploading the whole room when it is unnecessary.
Facehunch the object
- Search the artwork crop.
- Record any readable signature or title.
- Compare with artist, museum or authorised retailer pages.
- Distinguish an original work from a reproduction.
A poster may reproduce a famous painting with a different crop or colour treatment. Finding the painting's title does not establish the maker or value of the particular object in the room.
Stop at the legitimate answer
Do not use the room's incidental clues to infer a private address or occupant. If the artwork cannot be identified from the crop, ask the person who shared the picture through the existing appropriate channel. An unresolved object search is preferable to expanding into unrelated personal investigation.
