Usernames and display names are different
A display name may be shared by many users and can change frequently. A username may be unique within one platform while belonging to someone else on another. Treat spelling variants, punctuation and recycled handles as reasons to check, not as shortcuts to certainty.
If someone has given you a public handle, use the platform’s normal search or direct profile link. If your goal is finding a public business contact, begin with the organisation’s own website and published links. Do not assume a search aggregator knows who controls an account today.
Use an evidence ladder
- Look for the account link on a website the person or organisation controls.
- Check that the destination is the intended platform and profile.
- Compare relevant public context, such as a portfolio or role the owner explicitly publishes.
- Keep uncertain candidates separate instead of merging their details.
A matching avatar alone is weak evidence because pictures are easily copied. A matching short handle alone can be coincidence. The combination can still be wrong if both were copied by an impersonator.
What not to infer from an email or phone number
An email address or phone number shared for one purpose does not establish permission to investigate private memberships. Do not probe password resets, attempt logins or upload address books to a finder merely to discover possible accounts. Facehunch has no email, phone or dating-site membership lookup.
When you need to contact someone professionally, use a published contact route or ask for an introduction. If no route is offered, respect that absence rather than trying to reconstruct private contact details.
Record the link, not an invented profile
For your own audit, a useful record is the URL, the display name you saw, the date checked and whether you control the account. For someone else’s public page, retain only the information necessary for your stated purpose. Avoid publishing lists of guessed linked accounts.
Our social-media photo guide explains why an image match is similarly limited. If you are trying to reconnect, the lost-friends guide offers a consent-respecting alternative.
