Choose an attributable image
Prefer a museum, archive, creator or clearly licensed collection over an uncredited repost. Read the item-specific reuse guidance and your project's citation requirements.
Keep a simple record
- Save the image's title or description.
- Record creator and publisher separately.
- Copy the source-page URL and access date.
- Note the licence or permission information.
A search-results page is a discovery tool, not necessarily the image's source. Follow the result to the page that actually publishes and explains the image.
Repair a missing credit
If you already have an unattributed file, use image search and visible caption clues to locate a credible source. Do not assign the first matching site's name as the creator. When the origin remains uncertain, choose a different image with a clear record rather than inventing a citation.
Continue with responsible source checking.
